Summary

Autobiography from musician Tricky. Tricky’s layered, eerie, downtempo hip-hop style rose to prominence in the early 1990s and was part of the ‘Bristol Sound’ that defined the post-rave generation. Labeled the ‘godfather of trip-hop’, Tricky’s music embraces sounds form soul, punk, reggae, and hip-hop. After a brief spell with Massive Attack (he was a founder member), he went solo and his first album, Maxinquaye, was the NME’s Album of the Year in 1995 and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. He has made thirteen solo albums, toured for over twenty years and performed in 1200 shows in fifty-five countries.
Here he offers a portrait of himself as an artist, but also a slice of social history packed with anecdotes and voices from his upbringing on the margins of society. Tricky was raised in Bristol among gangs and gangsters and knew violence, poverty and neglect. In this book, he examines how his creativity has helped him find a different path to that of his relatives, some of whom were bare-knuckle fighters and thugs, and how his mother’s suicide has had a lifelong effect on him, both creatively and psychologically.
