Summary

The narrator is an unidentified woman. She settles with her mother in a deserted mountain village in an unnamed location. Their daily life is difficult because they live alone, in an oppressive and gloomy environment, behind closed doors, but also because winter is very harsh and they slowly start lacking resources. Thus, they only survive.

Moreover, their psychological condition is quite troubled. On the one hand, the mother is apathetic and slightly depressive, as she is unable to accept happiness and constantly perceives dangers and negativity. On the other hand, the daughter is gifted with an extraordinary sensitiveness and perhaps intelligence, which have led her to develop anxiety and need psychotherapy for a while. As their life stories unfold, we understand that both women’s past is particularly heavy and sorrowful. Then, a violent assault changes everything.
