Summary

David McCae, a writer from New York, has been asked to write a memoir for senator Kearney, the Republican candidate for the Presidential Elections. In order to finish the book David travels to Alaska, where he is supposed to interview an old friend of the senator's, grumpy and unpleasant star alpinist Dick Carlson. There the hostile, glacial, majestic landscape is at the center of people’s lives. Most of them hunt and have a close and violent relationship with nature. The atmosphere is quite oppressive and Carlson proves to be a true scoundrel.

A young woman, Nola, disappears and the common explanation is that she was killed by a bear while hiking. She is Carlson’s daughter and had apparently returned to the area to confront him about the past...
