The story of Mikko Paasi, a Finnish diver who was one of the rescue team for the football team who were trapped in the cave in Northern Thailand in July 2018. It is the story of what happened in the cave and of
the tense evacuation, but also of Mikko Paasi who accidentally shot his friend as a teenager.
The story of Mikko Paasi has been made into a documentary which was aired on Finnish TV in January 2019. There are negotiations with international distributors so this may be aired outside of Finland in the
future.
Johanna Elomaa is an established Finnish writer, journalist and scriptwriter.
Johanna Elomaa retells the reality of the cave rescue: the risks involved, the tension between the different countries involved as well of the feelings of the divers and the problems they faced. She also tells of Mikko Paasi’s own personal story. As a 16 year old teenager he was on a bus with friends. He was wearing a gun on a holster. His friend wanted to see the gun, but it went off when the bus made a sudden stop, killing his friend. Mikko Paasi was convincted for grand negligent homicide. He has struggled with the guilt and the consequences of this accident his entire life. During the rescue operation the media attention bought the accident, and whether or not he could ever atone for his guilt, to the fore.
