Summary

The novel is based on the author's real life. The story begins when a woman contacts the narrator. The woman is in possession of a box of toys who used to belong to her mother. The box is delivered to her publisher and there she picks it up. But it is never to be opened she tells her curious children. Her memory of childhood is fragmented and difficult, but the box does seem to open the wound again and questions start to haunt her. She starts seeking answers in her records at the national archive. These documents offer her some details of what she has forgotten: The changing homes, orphanages, temporary foster families. From here on the storytelling and remembrance begins.
The novel is a work of fiction, but it is written about the writer’s own childhood. With a mother who always wanted to be a writer but never had any success with getting her writing published. The mother was unpredictable, angry and short-tempered and Vita was constantly scared of her. And with a father who didn’t want anything to do with her. Vita is a scared child, mostly scared of her mother. It is the story of a childhood lived between so many different places often filled with neglect and loneliness.
