Pitch

England, present day. When Rosie Strange inherits her eccentric grandfather’s Essex Witch Museum, she is determined to sell up and cash in. But a professor, George Chin, steps in, offering her a very peculiar assignment: she needs to find the remains of Ursula Cadence, a woman accused of being a witch and therefore condemned to death nearly 400 years before.

Comments

Told from Rosie’s perspective, the story feels a bit oldschool and reminiscent of ’90 TV series such as Relic Hunters, but with a focus on the supernatural.

Before embarking on a career in education, the author was fronting Channel 4′s book programme, Pulp. She was the founding editor of Level 4, an arts and culture magazine, and is cocreator of Super Strumps, the game that reclaims female stereotypes. She now works for Metal Culture, an arts organisation, promoting arts and cultural events and developing literature programmes.
The next volume will be set around the case of a midwife who was executed (Strange Tricks), the book thereafter will be called STRANGE FEAR.

Summary

Book #1: STRANGE MAGIC

England, present day. When the thirty-year-old Rosie Strange inherits her eccentric grandfather’s Essex Witch Museum, she is determined to sell up and cash in. She is about to tell the news to the museum’s loyal retainers – the old caretaker Bronson and the clever historian and curator Sam Stone – as a professor, George Chin, steps in, offering them a very peculiar assignment: they need to find the remains of Ursula Cadence, a woman accused of being a witch and therefore condemned to death nearly 400 years before. Rosie doesn’t believe in the supernatural and is reluctant at first, but the prize Professor Chin is offering is high enough to convince her.
